The beginning of the school year is just around the corner for many students in the US. As summer ends, many schools have decided to incorporate plants into classrooms for the upcoming year.
Like office plants, having plants in the classroom can offer several benefits to students and educators. Studies have shown that indoor plants can help with improving concentration and can also reduce stress. According to Green Plants For Green Buildings, "Nature may promote learning by improving learners’ attention, levels of stress, self-discipline, interest and enjoyment in learning, and physical activity and fitness." When students’ stress levels are lower, they can be more productive which can lead to better grades.
The Student-Plant connection is not only limited to the grade school environment. On college and university campuses, an increasing number of plants and trees are being planted to create outdoor green spaces for students to enjoy. The aesthetically pleasing spaces are meant to help students and professors unwind from the stresses of college life.
Tree-lined sidewalks and communal greens provide shade for students while they study or exercise. They also act as spaces for people to socialize with each other. Physical activity and socializing are proven ways to improve your mood and mental health.
Since 2008, The Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota have been recognizing colleges and universities who have gone above and beyond with planting trees on their campuses. This year, the University of Alabama was named “Tree Campus USA” for the 7th consecutive year. The University has more than 12,000 trees on the campus. That comes out to almost three trees per student!
